“We put care into choosing the materials, but our product page doesn't show the difference.” “Customers keep asking the same questions about size and care.” If you want to improve a product description, start with what customers need to check before they buy.
For example, “a high-quality, easy-to-use bag” does not tell shoppers how much it holds or how to care for it. Materials, dimensions, photos of the inside, and a photo showing someone carrying it give customers information they can use to decide whether it suits them.
Start with one product that attracts frequent questions. Decide which questions to answer, what the answers are, which photos support them, and where the information belongs on the page. Then edit the description in Shopify.
Use information from customer conversations
Write down questions customers have actually asked before buying, in store or by email. Record each point of uncertainty—differences in materials, care instructions, or time until delivery—together with the answer given. Information you explain in person but have not included on the product page is a candidate for the description.
If you have received few questions so far, ask a colleague who does not know the product to look at the page and explain what they would want to check before buying. Record internal assumptions separately from actual customer feedback, and revisit the content as questions arrive.
Match each question with an answer, a photo, and a place on the page
Once you have collected questions, check how much of each answer you can confirm. Verify dimensions against supplier documents, care instructions against care labels or manufacturer guidance, and dispatch information against the fulfillment team's actual process. Do not fill gaps with assumptions about what is generally true.
The following table uses a fictional product, the “Popaz Lab Cotton Tote.” Its specifications and terms are also fictional examples, not measurements or sales terms for a real product.
| Question before purchase | Example answer to publish | Photo or diagram to prepare | Suggested location |
|---|---|---|---|
| How big is it? | The body is 36 cm wide × 37 cm high × 11 cm deep. The handles are 56 cm long | A dimension diagram and a photo showing someone carrying it | Summary and detailed size section |
| Can I keep small items separate? | It has one interior pocket | The inside of the bag and its pocket | Near the feature description |
| What is it made of? | 100% cotton | Close-up of the fabric and the material label | Product description and specifications |
| Can I wash it? | Gently wipe dirty areas with a cloth dampened with water. Do not machine wash or tumble dry | A photo of the care label, if an actual label is available | Care section; also mention the machine-washing restriction in the summary |
| When will it ship? | Dispatch within 3 business days of your order. Delivery dates vary by destination | No photo needed; display as text | Near the purchase button and in the shipping information |
The bag's external dimensions alone do not establish whether a particular laptop or document will fit. Check the opening, internal dimensions, and whether an item fits with its case before making a capacity claim. Only include load capacity or water resistance when you have evidence to support it.
Choose photos that help answer the questions. If you have several overall views but none of the inside, an interior photo will answer this question better than another overall view. Do not put dimensions or care instructions only inside images; make them available as text, too.
Before and after: a product description
Before changing the tone of the copy, add information that helps readers make a decision. Here is a comparison using the same fictional product.
Before
A high-quality, easy-to-use tote bag for every day. Recommended for outings and work.
The description names possible uses, but gives no information to support “easy to use.” Someone buying it for work needs to know its size; someone using it every day also needs care instructions.
After
This tote is made from 100% cotton. The body measures 36 cm wide × 37 cm high × 11 cm deep and has one interior pocket.
Size and materials
Body: 36 cm wide × 37 cm high × 11 cm deep
Handles: 56 cm
Material: 100% cotton
Interior pockets: 1
Color: BlackCare
Gently wipe dirty areas with a cloth dampened with water. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.Dispatch
Dispatch within 3 business days of your order. Delivery dates vary by destination.
These care instructions cannot be applied to every product made from 100% cotton. For an actual product, use the manufacturer's instructions or the results of your own checks.
You do not have to remove every phrase that expresses your brand, such as “high quality.” Follow it with an explanation of the materials, production methods, or use cases so readers can understand what it means. Shopify's own guidance lists specifications, uses, substantiated benefits, and product background as elements of a product description.
Explain what the price reflects
You do not need to publish a complete cost breakdown to help customers understand a price. Describe what the product actually includes, such as material selection, processing, or repair support.
For example, if a product is sewn in a workshop in Japan, show verified information about its production and photographs of the stitching. If you offer paid repairs, explain how to request them, which conditions are excluded, and how the cost is determined. This gives customers more to consider about ownership after purchase than statements such as “built to last” or “craftsperson quality” alone.
Confirm the actual place of manufacture and services offered before adding descriptions such as “made in Japan,” “handmade,” or “free repairs.” Do not invent unverified features to justify the price.
Edit the description and its presentation in Shopify
Edit each product's description in product management, and check the placement of the description and purchase button in the theme. This section covers a regular Online Store theme. A store built with a custom frontend will require a different approach to presentation changes.
Update the description and images in product management
- Open the relevant product under Products in the Shopify admin.
- Enter a short summary and details such as size, materials, and care in the description field. Use headings to separate topics, and avoid excessive large type or color added purely for decoration.
- Manage the price in the price field. Repeating the same amount throughout the description creates more places to update when the price changes.
- Add the necessary photos in the media section, placing a clear overall product photo first. Arrange interior, detail, and in-use photos to correspond with the description.
- Save, then check the text and photos on the product page.
Product descriptions can be edited as rich text. The first media item also serves as the main image in places such as product listings. Consider those placements when deciding the photo order.
Check the placement in the theme
Display the product in the Online Store theme editor. Aim for a layout with the product name, price, options, and purchase button near the top, with a short description or dispatch estimate nearby. Separate detailed size and care information with headings so customers can find it easily.
In a theme where the description appears before the purchase button, adding more text moves the button farther down the page. Check that the purchase button is easy to find on a smartphone, too. Consider adjustments your theme supports, such as moving detailed information below the button and keeping a short summary at the top.
Available blocks and collapsible sections vary by theme. If you use collapsible sections, remove any that contain only a heading and no content. Do not hide restrictions that affect the purchase decision solely inside a closed section.
Changing a theme template affects other products that use the same template. Check that you have not entered information intended for one product into a shared text field. If only some products need a different layout, using a separate template is an option.
Write a title and description for search results
If the product name alone does not make the type of product clear, include both naturally in the title. For the demo product, a name such as “Popaz Lab Cotton Tote” tells shoppers what the page sells.
In the description for search results, briefly describe the product's features and what readers can find on the page. Avoid strings of keywords such as “tote bag stylish popular recommended.” Similarly, write image alt text that describes what the photo shows, rather than filling it with search terms.
A longer description alone does not establish that search rankings or sales will improve. First check whether the text gives readers what they need to choose the product, then align the search wording with that content.
Check before publishing and assign responsibility for updates
Open the page on a smartphone and read it as someone unfamiliar with the product. Check that the units for dimensions are clear, the selected color matches the photos, and shoppers can find dispatch information and important restrictions before pressing the purchase button.
You can start with these checks:
- Specifications, photos, price, and care instructions are consistent.
- Time until dispatch is distinguished from time until delivery.
- No empty collapsible sections or references without working destinations remain.
- Essential information is available as text, without relying only on explanations inside images.
- Both the edited product and other products using the same template display correctly.
After publishing, record the date and details of the change, then watch for the same customer questions. If you compare traffic or purchases, also consider sales campaigns, prices, traffic sources, and stockouts.
Assigning responsibility for updates makes the content easier to maintain when staff change. In a small store, one person can cover several roles.
| Information to update | Role responsible for checking it | When to update |
|---|---|---|
| Materials, dimensions, and care | Product and purchasing staff | When the supplier, specifications, production batch, or similar details change |
| Dispatch estimates and acceptance conditions | Fulfillment and customer support staff | When busy periods, closure dates, or fulfillment arrangements change |
| Photos, descriptions, and placement | Ecommerce operations staff | When the above changes are reported or the same questions recur |
There is no need to rewrite every product at once. Start with one product, write a description that answers frequent questions, and put it in a form your team can review.
Frequently asked questions
Are longer product descriptions better?
Judge the description by whether it includes the information customers need. For a simple product, a short description and specification table may be enough. If choosing or caring for the product is more complex, keep the summary short and separate the details so readers can find what they need. Increasing the word count should not be the goal itself.
Do I need an app to improve a product page?
You can start by editing descriptions and adding photos in the standard admin. For complex comparison tables or different displays for individual products, check what your theme supports before deciding whether you need additional development or an app. Organizing the content first helps narrow down the necessary features.
How can I tell whether the page has improved?
First, check whether the page answers the questions you intended to address. After publishing, review recurring inquiries, product-page views, additions to cart, and purchases to the extent your store can measure them. When traffic is low, avoid drawing firm conclusions from a short period of data.
Even with all the product information available, a theme may prevent you from displaying it where it is needed. When contacting Popaz, share the current product page and the information you want customers to see before buying. We can assess what can be addressed by organizing the copy and what needs presentation changes.
