Shopify Receipt Apps in Japan: Compare Recipient Names, Pricing, and Reissues

Written by Kitsune

If customers increasingly ask for receipts made out to their company, an app that lets them enter the recipient name and download a PDF themselves may help. Compare the monthly price and number of receipts with what happens after issue: who can correct a name, and who can reissue the document? Those details determine whether the app fits your store's workflow.

For stores that want to manage receipt issue and reissue together, セルフ領収書 (Self Receipt) is an option. For stores that also need invoices, delivery notes, accounting, and shipping workflows, consider まるっと請求書 (Marutto Invoice). Both work in Japanese, but their free plans and merchant-issued receipt rules differ.

Distinguish a receipt from a qualified invoice

A receipt shows that payment was received. In Japan, if you issue a document as a qualified invoice under the Qualified Invoice System so a business customer can claim an input tax credit, the issuer must be a registered qualified invoice issuer, and the document must contain the required information.

An ordinary qualified invoice must include the issuer's name and registration number, transaction date, transaction details, the amount and applicable consumption tax rate for each tax rate, the consumption tax amount for each tax rate, and the recipient's name. In some cases, retailers and other eligible businesses can issue a qualified simplified invoice without the recipient's name. Do not assume that a document qualifies because its title says “receipt” or an app says it supports invoices. Check the fields on the document you actually issue. Japan's National Tax Agency lists the required fields.

If your business does not have a registration number and needs to issue an ordinary receipt, choose an app that works without one. Do not enter a fictitious registration number simply to get through setup.

Self Receipt: Let customers enter recipient names and request reissues

セルフ領収書, provided by 7thcode, focuses on receipts for orders paid in Japanese yen. Customers enter the recipient name and a description of the payment (但し書き), then issue a PDF. It suits stores that want to reduce the work of finding an order, copying a requested company name, and sending a revised receipt.

Customers can reach it from the order status page, their customer account, or a link in a notification email. Someone who is not logged in can also verify an order with its order number and the email address used at purchase. The app offers a setting for businesses without a qualified invoice registration number. See the provider's feature description.

Images supplied by 7thcode on the Shopify App Store. They show the customer flow from order verification to recipient-name entry and issue; they are not screenshots from our test store.

When the store issues a receipt on a customer's behalf, use “代理発行” (issue on behalf) on the app home screen. There you can specify the recipient name and payment description and keep an issue history. By contrast, printing from the Print menu on a Shopify order details page or order list produces a preview printout without an issue history or issue number. Use “代理発行” if you need a record of the document given to the customer.

A reissue receives a new issue number, records the original issue, and displays “再発行” (reissued) on the PDF. The app distinguishes reissuing a receipt with a corrected recipient name from downloading the same PDF again. “PDFを再取得” (retrieve PDF again) in the issue history preserves the original name and amount and does not count as another issued receipt. The default issue limit is 10 times per order; stores can change it to between 1 and 100. See the provider's issue and reissue specifications.

Choose a plan by issue volume and PDF storage needs

Prices and features below come from official public information available on October 18, 2026. Prices are in US dollars (USD) and exclude Shopify's own fees. Annual prices are the total charged for a year of annual billing.

PlanMonthlyAnnualMain featuresIssue limits and conditions
FreeFree—Customer self-issue, merchant issue on behalf, logo and square company seal, issue history, and retrieval of each PDF10 receipts per month; orders placed within the last 60 days; app credit shown on the PDF
Standard$3.99$39.90Everything in Free, plus no app credit; storage, tamper detection, and search for issued PDFs; bulk PDF download; accounting CSV; support for some partial refunds involving multiple tax rates; and merchant contact details on the customer screen100 receipts per month; seven-day free trial; additional permission required for orders older than 60 days
Professional$9.99$99.90The same listed features as StandardUnlimited receipts; no free trial; the same permission requirement as Standard for older orders

Customer self-issued and merchant-issued receipts count toward the same limit, and reissues also count. The allowance resets each calendar month in Japan time. When Free or Standard reaches its limit, new issues stop for that month, but previously issued PDFs can still be retrieved and the issue history remains available. Annual billing does not change the monthly receipt allowance; the subscription is billed once a year and renews automatically. See official pricing.

For example, Standard is an option if you issue 30 receipts a month and need to handle reissues made out to companies. Even at 10 or fewer per month, you need a paid plan if you want to store the issued PDF itself or export PDFs in bulk. Free recreates a PDF from its issue record; paid plans retrieve the stored PDF.

The app fits a store that only needs receipts for yen-denominated orders. It does not suit a store that wants the same app to issue invoices, delivery notes, quotations, or receipts in other currencies. Deleting the app also deletes its stored data, so export the PDFs and history you need before ending its use.

Marutto Invoice: Combine receipts with invoicing and shipping work

まるっと請求書 is a Japan-focused document app from Pepin. Alongside receipts, it handles invoices, delivery notes, and quotations. It suits stores with business customers who request documents for internal approval, such as quotations or delivery notes as well as receipts.

Customers enter a recipient name and payment description to obtain a document. We tested the order status page as the entry point for this article. The provider also describes issue from the thank-you page, order confirmation email, and order history. The order-history entry point supports new customer accounts; stores using the legacy account system can use the thank-you page or an email link. Merchants can choose which documents customers may issue and set conditions for issue before shipment or for cash-on-delivery orders. See the provider's features and conditions.

Basic also includes shipping-preparation features, such as CSV files for Japanese carriers' shipping labels and batch preparation of delivery notes. Pro adds quotations, consolidated month-end invoices, and journal-entry CSV files for accounting software. A store handling both regular online sales and wholesale orders could use it to bring customer receipts and business invoicing into one workflow.

The Free plan offers different documents to merchants and customers

PlanMonthlyAnnualMain featuresIssue limits and conditions
FreeFree—Merchant-issued invoices, customer self-issued receipts, preview before issue, notes, and honorific settings for recipient namesFive invoices and five self-issued receipts per month, in separate allowances; no card registration required
Basic$9.99No published priceMerchant and customer issue of invoices, delivery notes, and receipts; automatic invoice issue after payment; bulk PDF; shipping-label CSV; tax adjustments; logo, seal, templates, and custom fonts; search and CSV exportUnlimited monthly issues; bulk PDF is limited to 50 documents per batch; seven-day free trial
Pro$19.99No published priceEverything in Basic, plus quotations, quotations from the cart, consolidated month-end invoices, invoices split by shipment, business partner management and B2B integration, and journal-entry CSV for accounting softwareUnlimited monthly issues; consolidated invoices cover up to 50 orders; seven-day free trial

If you expect to exceed the free allowance or reissue receipts often, ask the provider before adopting the app how it counts those documents and what happens when the allowance is exceeded.

On Free, the merchant can issue invoices. A merchant staff member needs Basic or higher to create and hand over a receipt, while customers can issue up to five receipts themselves each month on Free. The necessary plan therefore depends on who issues the document, as well as the number issued. See pricing and features for all plans.

With Basic or higher, merchants can issue receipts from the app or the “印刷” (Print) action on the Shopify order screen. Basic's monthly price is also a starting budget for stores whose customers self-issue more than five receipts a month. The app is unsuitable if you need documents in languages other than Japanese or ordinary receipts from a business without a registration number. Initial setup requires company information and a registration number. See the provider's explanation of the free plan and supported language.

Customers enter the recipient name before issue but cannot change it afterward. On our test store's Free plan, issuing once changed the entry point to “領収書をダウンロード” (Download receipt), where we could retrieve a PDF with the same content as the original. This works better when customers settle the name before issue and then keep using the same document than when they need to change company names themselves repeatedly.

For merchant records, Basic and higher provide search by transaction date, amount, and customer or business partner, a list CSV, and bulk PDF export. If customer-controlled corrections after issue matter more, Self Receipt's reissue feature is an option.

Issue a receipt PDF with a recipient name on the Free plan

On Marutto Invoice's Free plan, we issued a receipt PDF with a recipient name from the order status page. The following steps use test order #1001, marked as paid, and fictitious company, department, and contact names.

Set up the customer entry point

  1. In Marutto Invoice, open “設定” (Settings) → “発行者情報” (Issuer Information). Under “会社情報” (Company Information), enter “会社名・屋号” (Company Name or Trade Name) and “登録番号” (Registration Number). Both are required; the registration number has a T followed by 13 digits. Enter any issuer address, phone number, and email address you want shown in their respective fields, then select “保存” (Save) near the bottom. These steps are for a registered issuer using its own information.
  2. Under “自動発行・セルフ発行” (Automatic and Self-Issue), enable “領収書” (Receipt) among the documents customers may issue. Open “領収書を出す条件” (Receipt Issue Conditions). If you accept issue before shipment, turn off “発送済みの注文だけ領収書を出す” (Issue Receipts Only for Shipped Orders). The on-screen explanation says that, when this is off, paid orders can receive a receipt before shipment. Exclude payment methods, such as cash on delivery, for which you do not want the store to issue a second receipt under “領収書を出さない支払い方法” (Payment Methods Excluded from Receipt Issue). Save any changes.
  3. On the same settings screen, open “注文状況ページに置く” (Place on Order Status Page). In the checkout editor, add “まるっと請求書 セルフ発行” (Marutto Invoice Self-Issue) to the order status page and save.

Test order #1001 was paid but not shipped. We checked that receipts were enabled, “発送済みの注文だけ領収書を出す” was off, and the test payment method was not excluded. The block was placed only on the order status page, not on the thank-you page.

Company information and receipt conditions in the Japanese-language app. The company name and registration number are test data; enter your own issuer details for real use.

Once saved, “領収書を発行” (Issue Receipt) appears on the order status page.

The upper image shows the added block in the checkout editor; the lower image shows the entry point for test order #1001. The editor's preview order #1004 and the order used to issue the PDF, #1001, are different orders.

Customer enters the recipient name and saves the PDF

  1. On the order status page, select “領収書を発行” (Issue Receipt).
  2. Enter the company name, department, contact name, and payment description. We used the fictitious examples “領収書テスト商事(架空)” (Receipt Test Trading, fictitious), “検証部” (Test Department), “サンプル太郎” (Sample Taro), and “商品代金として” (For goods purchased).
  3. The recipient name cannot be changed after issue. Correct the company spelling and any missing information now.
  4. Select “発行してダウンロード” (Issue and Download). When “領収書を発行しました。” (Receipt Issued) appears, save the PDF from “領収書をダウンロード” (Download Receipt).
Actual customer-side receipt form in the test store. The company and personal names are fictitious. Because the recipient name cannot be changed after issue, check it before selecting the issue button.

The saved PDF reflected the recipient name and payment description we entered. It showed a total received of ¥1,570, consisting of a ¥700 product and ¥870 shipping, together with the breakdown and issuer. Japanese text displayed correctly.

Receipt PDF actually saved with Marutto Invoice Free. This fictitious test order had ¥0 consumption tax. The registration number is dummy data and the address was not set, so this is not a completed example of a qualified invoice.

After issue, the button on the same order status page changes to “領収書をダウンロード” (Download Receipt). Opening it displays a notice that the receipt will be downloaded with the content from the time of issue; it does not ask for the recipient name again. The PDF we saved a second time had the same recipient name, payment description, and amount as the first.

Tell customers both where to issue the receipt and when to settle the recipient name. In the sample message below, link “contact our store” to your own contact form.

You can issue a receipt from your order status page. Select “領収書を発行” (Issue Receipt), enter the recipient name and payment description, and download the PDF. You cannot change the recipient name after issue, so please check your entries first. You can download an issued receipt again from the same page. If you entered something incorrectly, contact our store with your order number and the correct recipient name and payment description.

If you have no registration number or want customers to correct names

With Self Receipt, save the issuer name and, if your business is not registered, select the setting to use the app without a registration number. Then in Shopify open “設定” (Settings) → “チェックアウト” (Checkout) → “カスタマイズ” (Customize), open the order status page, add “セルフ領収書” from “アプリ” (Apps), and save. Customers can then enter a recipient name and payment description there and issue a PDF. These steps are based on the provider's instructions, not a test of this app in our store. See Self Receipt setup and issue instructions.

Handle corrections, repeat downloads, and refunds separately

When a customer asks for another receipt, first establish whether any content must change. In Self Receipt, use “PDFを再取得” (Retrieve PDF Again) in the issue history if the name and amount should stay the same. To correct a company name or other content, edit the recipient information and reissue instead. Because the original issue record remains, staff can trace the before and after even if the person handling the request changes.

According to the provider's official specifications, Self Receipt issues a receipt for the amount retained after a partial refund. Customers can issue it on any plan when the order has a single tax rate. For orders with both 8% and 10% rates, customer issue is available on paid plans if the refund detail makes the refunded amount at each tax rate determinable. For mixed-rate orders on Free, or refunds of an amount without specifying products where the breakdown cannot be determined, switch to merchant issue on behalf. The app does not issue a new receipt for a fully refunded or canceled order. See the refund and reissue conditions.

In Marutto Invoice, we confirmed on the customer screen that the recipient name cannot be changed after issue and that the same PDF content can be retrieved again. We did not verify receipt issue after a refund or the merchant's correction procedure. If you want customers to handle name corrections or post-refund issue, Self Receipt is an option because its provider describes the applicable conditions.
